Illinois Wesleyan Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity is an international, non-governmental, and non-profit organization, which was founded in 1976. Habitat has been devoted to building "simple, decent, and affordable" housing, a self-described "Christian housing ministry," and has addressed the issues of poverty housing all over the world. The international operational headquarters are located in Americus, Georgia with the administrative headquarters located in Atlanta.
The mission statement of Habitat for Humanity is "Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope". Homes are built using volunteer labor and are sold at no profit.
Illinois Wesleyan's campus chapter is a student-led, student-initiated organization that partners with the local Habitat affiliate, McLean County, to fulfill the four functions of a campus chapter. The four functions of a campus chapter are: building, fundraising, advocating and educating.
Illinois Wesleyan Habitat for Humanity's chapter also partners with Illinois State University as they work together to build a home for a local family in need and raise $40,000 a year through fundraising events. Members build every Saturday morning from 8am-12pm during the academic school year and attend and partcipate in weekly meetings. Students enjoy volunteering their time to better their community.
